Using the 4Ds to spot trouble before it becomes an incident

The — 4Ds Dumb, Dangerous, Difficult, Different — are four simple flags that tell workers and supervisors something isn't right. When any one of these shows up on a job, it's a sign to pause, talk and rethink the plan.

Why it matters

The 4Ds give workers simple language to call out concerns

On many worksites, people recognize when something doesn’t look or feel right, but may not have the words to raise it. The 4Ds provide a common language to flag situations that need a pause or a second look, before they turn into something serious.

This video is meant for site leads, foremen and workers, to spark honest conversations about risk and decision-making on the job.

The 4Ds

Dumb — It doesn’t make sense / it feels wrong

Dangerous — Someone could get hurt

Difficult — It’s pushing limits / too much effort

Different — Not how we normally do it

Ask your crew

Have we seen any of the 4Ds lately?

When have you worked through something that felt Dumb, Dangerous, Difficult, or Different?

Did we speak up — or push through?

What would we do differently next time?
