What is an Energy Safety Canada Auditor?

Energy Safety Canada Auditors play a key role in helping companies achieve and maintain their Certificate of Recognition (COR). 

There are two certification tracks for safety auditors: 

External Auditors are Independent professionals who may be hired by companies to conduct both certification and maintenance audits. This track has additional education and experience requirements.

Requirements

To apply as an Energy Safety Canada External Auditor, you must meet the following requirements:

Education or Professional Designation

You must have one of the following:

  • A certificate, diploma, or degree in Occupational Health and Safety from an eligible program OR
  • A recognized professional safety designation, such as:
    • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • Certified Health & Safety Management System Auditor (CHSMSA) with a minimum two-year OHS diploma/degree from an accredited institution
    • CHSMSA with at least seven of the past ten years practicing in health and safety

Note: Other designations (e.g., National Construction Safety Officer, ISO certifications, Canadian Health and Safety Consultant) do not meet ESC’s minimum requirements.

Application Process for CHSA External Auditor

Step 1

Application Approval

Submit your application for review. Once approved, you’ll receive an email confirmation. 

Application Supporting Documents 

  • Resume – A current version outlining your work history.
  • Education/Certification Proof – A copy of your professional safety designation certificate, or an applicable certificate, diploma, or degree.
    • Note: A formal transcript may be requested.
  • Professional References – At least two completed Professional Reference Forms (PRFs) that together demonstrate at least five years of full-time
    health and safety work experience.
    • PRFs must be completed by current or past supervisors, or by peers in the same role.
    • If you are a consultant, PRFs should be completed by recent clients and must represent at least five years of experience.

Note:

Applicants are considered to have abandoned the process and must reapply and take the five (5) day course again when they:

  • do not register for the CHSA course within four months of approval
  • do not complete the CHSA course within one year of approval
  • do not submit a student audit within six (6) months of the course

Applications that are not fully completed with all supporting documentation will delay the process. 

Recertification: Auditor must have performed 2 audits in the past 3 years to re-certify.
