Dropped objects are among the most frequent and dangerous hazards in the energy industry.

A wrench, a clamp, even a bolt — when something falls from height, it hits with serious force.

This program provides practical templates, tools and awareness materials to help you build or strengthen your dropped-object prevention process without starting from scratch.

Why it matters

Struck by falling objects is a Top 10 Potentially Serious Incident in Alberta

Since 2018, nearly a third of Alberta’s potential serious incidents have involved dropped or falling objects. Most of them could have been prevented with better planning, inspection, and simple control measures.

These aren’t isolated events — they happen during everyday work: lifting tools, rigging, maintenance, or even walking under scaffolding. This program helps companies take action before something falls.

And we’re not tackling this alone. The DROPS Canadian Chapter — part of the global Dropped Object Prevention Scheme — works with industry, regulators and Energy Safety Canada to share learning and raise the standard for dropped-object prevention across the country.
